Celebrating Teacher’s Day: A Tribute to My Gurus

Today, we celebrate the invaluable role of teachers—those who shape young minds, chisel character, and help children grow into capable, well-rounded individuals. As I reflect on my school days, I am reminded of my respected teachers who not only taught subjects but also contributed profoundly to our personality development. Whatever I have achieved today is thanks to their dedication, guidance, and patience.

I fondly remember our English teacher, Haribhushan Babu, who patiently taught us punctuation, prepositions, narration, and the art of constructing simple sentences. His lessons left an indelible mark on me.

Though my father, a government servant, hoped I would pursue a government job, life had a different plan. A fascination for photography gradually took over, and I immersed myself in learning this art—visiting photography salons, studying the works of masters like Raghu Rai and Venu Sen during the black-and-white era.

I joined the Bihar Photography Association, where several accomplished amateur photographers—Dr. Varun, T.K. Banerjee (Tarit Da), R.N. Prasad—mentored me. They shared invaluable tips on lighting, shooting, and film processing, nurturing my passion and guiding me to make photography my livelihood. This Teacher’s Day, I pay my heartfelt gratitude to all those mentors who shaped my journey.

Teacher’s Day, celebrated across India on 5th September, honors the birth anniversary of the great philosopher and educator Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. Born on 5th September 1888 in Madras, he dedicated his life to teaching at universities in Madras, Mysore, and Kolkata. His students, inspired by his wisdom and simplicity, suggested celebrating his birthday. Dr. Radhakrishnan, however, proposed that instead of him, the day should honor all teachers—a tradition we continue to uphold today.

On this day, teachers are respected, honored, and appreciated through gifts, cards, flowers, and acts by students. It is also a day when students step into the teacher’s shoes and teachers enjoy being students, reinforcing the bond of mutual learning.

Teaching today has evolved remarkably. From blackboards and charts, education has transformed with audio-visual aids, 3D animation, and digital platforms. Teachers themselves are continuously learning, embracing technology to make education more engaging and interactive. The pandemic accelerated this transformation, highlighting the importance of online learning and digital tools. Today, smart boards, digital pens, quizzes, and online assignments have made learning exciting and student-centric.

As the old saying goes:

  • Mother is our first Guru,
  • Earth is the second,
  • Father is the third,
  • Teacher is the fourth, guiding us with wisdom,
  • And the fifth teaches spirituality.

On this Teacher’s Day, I extend my heartfelt wishes to all teachers and mentors who continue to inspire, educate, and uplift.
