Wet Market Rush – Post-Shravan Indulgence in Ranchi
Wet
Market Rush – Post-Shravan Indulgence in Ranchi
As the pious
month of Shravan came to a close, Ranchi’s wet markets witnessed an
extraordinary rush. This Sunday was unlike any other — the day marked the end
of a month-long abstinence from non-vegetarian meals for many devotees. Having
restrained their culinary cravings for weeks, locals poured into the markets
with palpable excitement, eager to relish the flavors they had missed.
From early
morning, the fish stalls became the epicenter of activity. People jostled
shoulder-to-shoulder, their eyes scanning the displays for the choicest catch.
Animated bargaining filled the air as buyers negotiated not just over prices,
but over the size, freshness, and weight of their prized fish.
The scene
was a perfect metaphor for a bustling, competitive arena — vibrant, noisy, and
alive with the sights, smells, and sounds unique to an Indian fish market.
While many went for familiar, pocket-friendly choices like fresh Rohu, Katla,
and Garai, the premium delicacies — Illish, Bhetki, Pabda, and shrimp —
remained the indulgence of the more refined palate, often referred to as the Bhadra
Lok preference.
Prices on
the day:
- Katla (big, 2–3 kg):
₹280–₹350/kg
- Katla (medium, ~1 kg): ₹220/kg
- Rohu (big, 2–3 kg): ₹220/kg
- Illish (premium): ₹800/kg
- Fresh Shrimp: ₹500/kg
- Mutton: ₹800/kg
- Chicken (dressed): ₹160/kg
Ranchi’s wet
markets — including Fresh Fish Market (Sector 3, Jagannathpur), Hygienic Fish
Market (Dhurva), Kara Fish Merchant (Kerbside pickup), Kokar Market, and Piska
More — were teeming with buyers. Vendors, with their booming voices, competed
for attention, though in today’s world, they also embrace modern marketing:
maintaining websites, leveraging social media, running seasonal offers,
collaborating with local chefs, and even partnering with restaurants.
For one day,
the city’s love for non-vegetarian fare transformed the humble fish market into
a festive hub of energy — a true celebration of flavors returning to the plate.
