The Rise of Helicopter Culture in Indian Elections
The Rise of Helicopter Culture in Indian Elections
Abstract: In this article explores the growing
use of helicopters by political parties during Indian elections. It highlights
the logistical advantages, financial implications, and potential impact on
voter engagement.
Introduction: The election season witnesses a distinct
phenomenon - the proliferation of helicopters in the skies. Political parties,
particularly those with national ambitions, extensively employ helicopters to
campaign across vast geographical landscapes. This practice offers logistical
benefits but also raises questions about its impact on voters and campaign
spending.
Logistical
Advantages and Financial Implications: Helicopters enable leaders to reach remote areas
efficiently, facilitating campaign penetration. This strategy is particularly
relevant for states in India's diverse geography. However, this convenience
comes at a cost. Helicopter operators experience a surge in demand during
elections, leading to inflated charter rates. The article provides estimates of
costs based on helicopter models and passenger capacity. Parties may also
pre-book helicopters or secure guaranteed flight hours, further increasing
expenses.
Estimate cost
of Helicopter operation: As per estimates in this election season helicopter operator’s net profit
estimated Rs 350 to 400 Crores. This kind of demand is seen never before that’s
why the rate increased whopping 35 to 40%. As per estimating agency helicopter
are given at per hours of flying, which depends upon the make and models of the
helicopters. Helicopters like BEL 407 single engine comes about 1.5 lakh per
hour which can accommodate about 6-7 person. Augusta helicopter model AW 109
and H 145 of Airbus of double engine costs 2.3 to 2.5 lakh per hour which can
accommodate 7 to 8 persons. 15 seated Augusta helicopter will cost 4 lakh per
hours, this is the first choice of VVIPs.
Impact on Voter
Engagement: The article
acknowledges the allure of helicopters for voters. The sight of a flying
machine landing at a rally can be a novelty, drawing crowds. However, the
question arises whether this translates into genuine engagement with the
leader's message. The focus may shift from the leader's vision to the spectacle
itself.
Conclusion: Helicopter usage in Indian elections
is a growing trend with both logistical advantages and financial burdens. While
attracting crowds, it's crucial to consider the impact on the substance of
political discourse.
