Khela: A Celebration of Sisterhood and Blessings #DurgaPuja #SindoorKhela
Sindoor Khela, literally meaning
"vermillion play," is a vibrant ritual that marks the joyous
culmination of Durga Puja festivities for Bengali women. It's a beautiful
display of sisterhood and blessings, taking place on the tenth day of Durga Puja,
also known as Vijayadashami.
A Tradition Steeped in Meaning
Dressed in stunning white sarees
with red borders, married women come together to apply sindoor, a red powder,
to the forehead and feet of the Goddess Durga, and then share it with each
other. This exchange of sindoor symbolizes a prayer for a happy married life,
the well-being of their husbands and children, and protection from evil.
The tradition is believed to have
originated in West Bengal and parts of Bangladesh around 400 years ago. Today,
it's a cherished part of Vijayadashami celebrations across India.
Beyond Tradition: A Celebration of
Life
Sindoor Khela is more than just a
ritual; it's a joyous celebration. Women laugh, share sweets (prasad), and
revel in the power and blessings of Durga. While traditionally performed by
married women, in some regions, men and unmarried girls also participate,
adding to the spirit of community.
The Significance of Sindoor
Sindoor, the red powder used in the
ritual, holds deep meaning. It's a visual marker of marital status in Hindu
communities, but here it signifies much more. The color red represents fire,
blood, and strength – a reminder of the inner power women possess. The parting
of the hair, where the sindoor is applied, becomes symbolic of a river of life-giving
blood.
Witnessing the Beauty
The vibrant colors, infectious
laughter, and the joy of shared blessings make Sindoor Khela a truly
captivating sight. It's a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the
strength of the bonds between women.
