Farewell to Sawan, and Rakhee fest
The
Final Farewell to Sawan: Celebrating the Last Somwari with Fervor #Sawan Somwar
#LordShiva
Today holds a special significance,
as it is the 5th and last Sawan Somwar of 2024. Observed with great religious
fervor by Hindus, this day is dedicated to worshipping Lord Shiva and seeking
his blessings. Devotees across India, especially in Ranchi, observed a
sunrise-to-sunset fast, performing rituals like Abhishekam (sacred bathing of
the idol) and chanting mantras in honor of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Everywhere you looked in Ranchi,
young and old alike sported tilaks (religious markings) on their foreheads, a
testament to their devotion to Lord Shiva.
A Day of Rituals and Chants
The day is marked by a multitude of
rituals. Devotees thronged temples like Sureshwar Nath Temple (Ranchi),
Mahakaal Temple (Ujjain), Dwarikadhis Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Mandir (Dwarka,
Gujarat), and Kashi Vishvanath Temple (Varanasi) to offer special puja items to
Lord Shiva. Chanting mantras, stotrams (devotional hymns), and the powerful
"Om Namah Shivaya," "Har Har Mahadev," and "Bol
Bum" filled the air. Some devotees even used this powerful period for deep
meditation.
Somwar Vrat: A Day of Abstinence and
Blessings
Sawan Somwars, the Mondays that fall
during the month of Sawan, are considered extremely holy and auspicious.
Devotees of Lord Shiva undertake a rigorous fast known as Somwar Vrat,
abstaining from food, grains, and non-vegetarian meals, to seek his blessings
for health, prosperity, and enlightenment.
A Special Coincidence: Sawan Somwar
and Raksha Bandhan
This Somwar held an extra special
significance as it coincided with the festival of Raksha Bandhan. Sisters
prepared themselves to tie Rakhis (sacred threads) on their brothers' wrists,
while brothers in return, vowed to protect and care for their sisters
throughout their lives.
So, the devout have finally found a
gentle release from the month-long abstinence from non-vegetarian meals. A hint
of relief, masked by a touch of shyness, can be seen on the faces of those who
truly relish these dishes. This strict adherence to vegetarianism marks the
holy month of Sawan in the Hindu calendar.
