Vat Savitri Puja

Vat Savitri Puja

When I got up early in the morning today. I found to my surprise that my Mrs is ready in new attire and going somewhere with galvanized bronze plate full with worshipping material. As that is the time when I use to go out for morning stroll she directed me to be at home as she is going out for Puja to a nearby temple. Without making any fuss I just nodded and again resigned to bed. Then I came to know that today 6th June, 2024 as per Hindu rituals it is the day of Hindu married women who worship Lord Shiva and Vishnu for the long life, better future and well being of their husbands is called ‘Vat Savitri Puja’. It is celebrated every year on the day of Amavasaya Tithi (New Moon day).

The women use to keep fast, move around Banyan tree in bright red colorful attires with cotton cord seven times and take the blessings of pundits, seniors in their homes and break their fast by having sprouted grams and sweets. As the folklore goes it is the story of Savitri daughter of King Ashvapati and Satyavan who was an exiled prince and cursed with early death whom Savitri chosen as her husband. But Yamraj came to take the life of Satyavan it is she who impressed Yamraj and become able to get back the life of her husband from the God of death Yamraj under a Banyan tree and at the same time he blessed her to become mother of 100 sons.

As per religious belief whoever use to take fast on this day and worships under the Banyan tree which is symbol of Trimurti namely Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, get their blessings. Keeping fast on this day God blesses them for good conjugal life and have  offspring’s of good moral character. That’s why women use to celebrate this day in a very pious and religious way by keeping fast, in fresh and new cloorful attires, with lot of puja materials and break their fast with  sweet dishes. And also use to gift some money, sweets to downtrodden for getting their blessings. In this way it is believed that doing charities all the problems of life fades away.

This is the day only that can also be called husband’s day, as this is day when their better half doing all kinds of cajoling, rituals and worshipping for them only. So cheer up folks.
