Giggling Baby – A Treasure of Joy 💕👶

A few years ago, we received the delightful news that a new member was joining our family — we became grandparents! It was a moment of pure joy and celebration for all of us. Our little princess was warmly welcomed with love and excitement. Soon, we set out for Patna to meet her, and the moment we laid eyes on her, our hearts melted. She was adorable, soft as wool, and her changing expressions instantly became the center of attention — a true cynosure for everyone around her.

Today, on her birthday, I’m reposting this cherished picture. In deep rural areas of Bihar, it’s a common belief that when an infant giggles, it’s like the child is communicating with God. Family members respond with funny faces and gestures, creating a joyous atmosphere filled with laughter and love.

The Science Behind the Smile 😊

Typically, babies start giggling around four months of age as they begin recognizing facial expressions, touch, and emotional connections with their parents and loved ones. During this phase, they absorb their surroundings, respond to affection, and form early bonds. Giggles aren’t constant — they appear when the baby feels safe, comfortable, and gently caressed by familiar hands.

By 6 to 12 weeks, babies start smiling, recognizing people instinctively, and expressing joy or comfort through their eyes and movements.

How I Captured Her Giggle 📸

This particular photo was taken when she was just one month old — born on 13th September, and I captured this frame on 13th October. She was peacefully sleeping near a window with frosted glass, sunlight falling softly on her face, while she wore a slight frown. I asked a family member to hang a white cloth (like a dhoti) over the window, which diffused the harsh sunlight, creating a soft glow around her. She immediately felt more comfortable and began to smile.

To enhance the moment, I requested some flowers and a lovely headgear, which, when gently placed on her head, made her giggle with delight.

With my Canon EOS 7D and a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, I set up for a close-up shot. I placed her on a large white towel, used an aperture of f/3.5, shutter speed of 1/250, and ISO 200 to create a shallow depth of field, keeping her face in sharp focus while the background softened beautifully. Using high-speed servo at 8 fps, I captured a series of expressions — smiles, giggles, cries — that reflected the innocence and purity of early childhood.
