Puja Kar Aur Talab Mein Daal – A Sad Reality
Puja Kar
Aur Talab Mein Daal – A Sad Reality
(Do
Worship and throw into the Pond)
Today, as I
walked by the newly renovated Argora Talab in my area, my heart sank.
The once pristine pond, filled with fresh groundwater, now lay polluted and
littered with remnants of Teej Puja materials. A place that was recently
beautified with earthmovers, landscaped surroundings, and a walking path for
the community is now in a heartbreaking state.
The
pedestrian pathway is damaged, the approach road is almost inaccessible, and
the pond itself is rendered unusable. Despite being located near a posh colony,
where one expects better civic sense, the sight was deeply disappointing.
Sadly, this
is not an isolated case. During Chhath Puja and Durga Puja, idols
and ritual materials are often dumped into ponds and rivers, leading to severe
water pollution. Yet, we conveniently blame government agencies while ignoring
our own actions that destroy the environment.
Why Does
This Matter?
- A polluted pond kills aquatic
plants and animals, disrupts the ecosystem, and depletes oxygen levels in
the water.
- Wildlife often ingests debris or
gets entangled, leading to injury or death.
- Toxic chemicals from puja
materials seep into the soil and water, harming both animals and humans.
- Polluted water can spread
diseases through aquatic species consumed by humans.
- Dirty water bodies also reduce
the beauty and real estate value of the surroundings, while cleanup costs
burden taxpayers.
In October
2004, thousands of fish died in Kankariya Lake, Ahmedabad, due to
plaster of Paris from idols reducing oxygen levels. A similar incident occurred
in 2019 in the Sabarmati River, highlighting the deadly consequences of
negligence.
The Way
Forward
We must
embrace eco-friendly celebrations, avoid dumping ritual waste into water
bodies, and support proper waste disposal methods. Clean ponds mean healthier
communities, thriving biodiversity, and a better environment for future
generations.
