Masala Dosa – A Timeless Delight!


After returning from the Maha Kumbh Mela, my wife and I were both exhausted. Around 8 PM, she suggested dining out instead of cooking, and I immediately thought of a newly opened restaurant right across from our residence. Dressed casually, we decided to give it a try.

As we browsed the menu, our hearts settled on Masala Dosa—a dish that has been a favorite of mine since my college days. Within ten minutes, steaming hot and crispy dosas arrived, served with an assortment of chutneys and flavorful sambar. Hunger made every bite even more delightful, and we savored the dish slowly, enjoying both the flavors and the tranquil ambiance of the restaurant.

A Nostalgic Journey

My love for Masala Dosa dates back to the early 1970s when I first tasted it at Bharat Coffee House, a famous South Indian restaurant in Patna, right across from my college. Back then, a plate of Masala Dosa cost just 50 paise, and I instantly fell in love with its crispy texture and aromatic spices. Over the years, my fondness for this dish has only grown, with cherished memories of enjoying it in different places—even in Sydney and Melbourne, where my son surprised me with authentic South Indian flavors.

What Makes Masala Dosa Special?

✅ Made from a fermented rice and lentil batter, ensuring a light and crispy texture.
✅ Filled with a spiced potato mixture, often enhanced with onions and curry leaves.
✅ Traditionally served with coconut chutney and sambar, making it a wholesome and nutritious meal.
✅ Variations like Paper Masala Dosa and Rava Masala Dosa offer different textures and flavors.

The Origins & Legacy

Masala Dosa hails from the Udupi region of Karnataka, though Tamil Nadu also claims its origins dating back to the 1st Century AD. Interestingly, Chalukya King Someshvara III mentioned a dosa recipe in his 1126 CE text Manasollasa, showing how deep its roots run in Indian history.

A Reflection on Time & Prices

When the bill arrived, I was taken aback—₹400+ for two! A stark contrast to the ₹60 per plate at a street cart just across from the restaurant. Of course, the ambiance, presentation, and hospitality made a difference. But it also reminded me of my college days when I relished the same dish for just 50 paise—how times have changed!
