The Little Flag Seller: A Tale of Innocence and Pride

While on my morning stroll today in my colony, I encountered a little girl selling miniature Indian flags. As India celebrates its Republic Day with immense patriotism, she stood at the corner of the street, clutching her tricolors. It was around 8:30 AM, and the chilly winter air didn’t deter her.

Curious, I struck up a conversation with her. With a radiant smile and innocent determination, she shared that it was a holiday, and her mother had entrusted her with the task of selling flags before returning home. When I inquired about the price, she humbly quoted her rates and politely requested, “No bargaining, please—my mummy decided these prices.”

Though I already had flags at home, I couldn’t resist her earnest spirit and offered her some freshly made sweet jalebis from a nearby shop. Her simple frock and pink pullover barely protected her from the biting cold, but she stood unwavering, extending her tiny hand with the tricolor to passersby, hoping to make a sale.

The street was alive with activity—people rushing to attend the parade at Morhabadi Ground in Ranchi, others exploring colorful items displayed along the bustling market. Yet, this little girl’s innocence and quiet pride made her stand out. For her, these flags weren’t just merchandise—they were symbols of hope, unity, and pride. Each flag she sold carried her dream of a brighter future.

Some pedestrians paused to appreciate her dedication and bought flags, while others walked past. But she remained steadfast, her gleaming eyes filled with hope and her heart brimming with dreams.

To me, this little girl is a poignant reminder of the true spirit of Republic Day—resilience, hopes, and pride in being Indian. As I walked around the city, I noticed several children like her, standing at every corner, selling miniature flags with the same enthusiasm and determination.

Let us not forget the significance of this day. On 26th January 1950, the Constitution of India came into effect, transforming India into a sovereign, democratic republic. Republic Day is celebrated with immense pride and showcases our unity in diversity. The grand parade at Rajpath in New Delhi, presided over by the President of India, highlights the strength of the Indian Army, our cultural heritage, and technological achievements.

Let us honor the sacrifices made for our nation and cherish the values enshrined in our Constitution.
