The Chilling Embrace of Winter Fog

The Chilling Embrace of Winter Fog: A Season's Disruption (#Winter Fog #Safety First)

As the last whispers of the westerly disturbance fade, the Gangetic plains brace themselves for a new challenge – the arrival of winter in all its glory. But this winter's embrace isn't just a drop in temperature; it descends as a thick blanket of fog, mist, or haze, shrouding the region in a veil of limited visibility.

From Punjab and Haryana to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the heavy fog has painted a worrying picture. News reports are filled with stories of road accidents caused by the low visibility, with casualties reported in Deoghar and Ramgarh districts of Jharkhand. The notoriously fog-prone New Delhi-Agra Yamuna Expressway witnesses similar struggles every year, with accidents becoming a grim reality.

This dense fog disrupts not just daily commutes but also air and rail travel. Flights are delayed or cancelled, causing inconvenience for thousands trying to navigate their journeys. Districts bordering the Gangetic plains, like Patna, Ara, Buxar, and Bhagalpur in Bihar, find themselves particularly affected.

For pilots, low visibility conditions pose a significant challenge. Landings become complex maneuvers, often requiring the expertise of seasoned pilots utilizing Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) for safe touchdown.

But the impact goes beyond travel disruptions. The high humidity and moisture trapped in the fog can exacerbate respiratory issues for those with pre-existing conditions, especially the elderly. While it's advisable to avoid outdoor activities during heavy fog, many have no choice but to venture out to earn their daily bread. The image of a thelawala (cart puller) struggling through the dense fog paints a poignant picture of the hardships faced by those who can't afford to stay home.

Here are some safety tips to remember during winter fog:

  • Drivers: Slow down and allow extra travel time. Use low beams or fog lights, as high beams can worsen visibility.
  • Pedestrians: Be extra cautious when crossing roads. Wear reflective clothing for better visibility.
  • People with respiratory issues: Limit outdoor activity if possible. Consult your doctor for any concerns.

Let's all be aware of the challenges winter fog brings and take precautions to stay safe.
