A Photographer's Journey, Sonpur Fair
A Photographer's Journey: Capturing the Spirit of Kartik
Purnima at the Sonpur Mela #KartikPurnima #SonpurMela
Kartik Purnima,
a vibrant festival celebrated across India, holds a special place in my heart.
Not only for its religious significance, but also for the bustling Sonpur Mela
that coincides with it. This year marks 40 years since I embarked on a photo
adventure at the fair, back in the black and white era.
Imagine this: 3
am, crisp morning air, and the hum of my trusty Suzuki motorbike as I make my
way to Sonpur. Crossing the majestic Ganges on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu bridge,
anticipation builds. My destination: the Konahara ghat, where a spectacle
awaits.
As the first
rays of dawn paint the horizon, a group of Mahouts bathe their majestic
elephants in the Gandak river. Their silhouettes against the rising sun create
a magical, almost mystical scene. Capturing this moment perfectly requires
meticulous planning. Even with a limited 28mm lens (wide-angles were a luxury
back then!), I meticulously compose the frame, and adjusting exposure to ensure
no detail is missed.
The Sonpur Mela
is a photographer's paradise. Beyond the majestic elephants, a kaleidoscope of
life unfolds. Vibrant birds, playful dogs, powerful horses, and gentle cows –
the variety of animals is a sight to behold. The state government caters to
every need, from comfortable accommodations to delicious food and lively
entertainment featuring folk dancers from across India.
Adding a touch
of history, some modern-day Zamindars (landlords) showcase their prized horses,
mimicking the age-old tradition where kings would challenge contenders to catch
their steeds. Witnessing these displays of pride and tradition adds another
layer to the experience.
