A Chance Encounter with the House of Yesudas
A Chance Encounter with the House of Yesudas in Fort
Kochi #KeralaTravel #LegendsLair
Kerala, aptly
nicknamed "God's Own Country," is a vibrant state known for its
natural beauty and rich culture. On a trip there, I had the delightful surprise
of stumbling upon a piece of musical history - the ancestral house of the
legendary singer K.J. Yesudas.
Yesudas, a true
icon of Indian music, has captivated audiences for over six decades with his
soulful renditions in various languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and
even Arabic! His estimated recordings exceed a staggering 50,000 songs.
While exploring
Fort Kochi, a charming town famous for its Portuguese heritage, I spotted a
building bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. Emblazoned on it was the
name "House of Yesudas." Intrigued, I captured a few photos and, with
the kind permission of the staff, ventured inside.
The house, now
a restaurant and cafe, was beautifully maintained. The staff, friendly and
attentive, served me a steaming cup of coffee. As I sipped it, I couldn't help
but admire the ornately carved interiors, remnants of a bygone era. Inquiring
about the legendary singer, I learned he was currently abroad for a concert.
Did you know
Yesudas holds the record for singing eleven songs in different languages in a
single day? He's also a gifted composer, having created music for Malayalam
films in the 70s and 80s. His numerous accolades include the prestigious Padma
Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan awards, along with eight National
Awards for Best Male Playback Singer.
Today, the
House of Yesudas serves as a treasure trove for its owner, visitors like
myself, and music enthusiasts alike. It's a place where fans can enjoy a cup of
coffee, soak in the ambiance, and learn about the life and legacy of this
musical maestro.
Located
conveniently at Princess Street, Fort Nagar, Fort Kochi-682001 (near Kochi
beach), the House of Yesudas is a must-visit for anyone exploring Fort Kochi.
