Celebrating
Motherhood, Compassion, and Strength: Skandmata Puja on the 5th Day of Navratri
#Navratri #Skandmata
As we journey through the nine
sacred days of Navratri, the fifth day holds a special significance. It's a day
dedicated to worshipping Skandmata, the fifth manifestation of the powerful
Goddess Durga.
Skandmata embodies the essence of
motherhood, radiating compassion and fierce love. She is the divine mother of
Lord Kartikeya, a symbol of valor and strength. The word "Skanda"
refers to Kartikeya, and "Mata" translates to mother.
Visualizing the Divine Mother
Often depicted riding a lion with
four arms, Skandmata exudes an aura of power and grace. Two of her hands hold a
lotus flower, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. The other two cradle her
beloved son, Lord Kartikeya. She is also known as Goddess Padmasana because she
sits regally on a lotus pedestal.
Yellow: The Color of Optimism
The color associated with Skandmata
is yellow, which radiates happiness, optimism, and inner sunshine. It evokes
feelings of brightness and cheerfulness, reflecting the blessings Skandmata
bestows upon her devotees.
Seeking Blessings
Devotees seek Skandmata's blessings
for a happy and fulfilling family life, strength to overcome challenges,
knowledge to navigate life's path, and the fulfillment of their desires. She is
also invoked for protection, prosperity, and success.
Observing the Puja
On this auspicious day, devotees
rise early, bathe in holy water, and wear clean clothes. They light a diya (oil
lamp) and offer a garland, vermillion, and other sacred items to Skandmata
while chanting mantras.
White, symbolizing purity and
innocence, is the recommended color for clothing on this day. Devotees believe
that white enhances their devotion and makes them more receptive to Skandmata's
divine blessings.
The Power of Maternal Love
Skandmata also embodies the
courageous spirit of a mother protecting her child. This is why some childless
couples observe a fast and worship Maa Skandmata, seeking the blessing of
parenthood.
Double the Blessings
By worshipping Skandmata, devotees
receive double the blessings! Lord Kartikeya, seated in her lap, is also
worshipped, bestowing his blessings of power and prosperity upon those seeking
his favor.
A Symbol of Nurturing and Protection
Lord Kartikeya, the God of war, is
also known as Skanda. Often offered bananas as prasad (offering), Skandmata is worshipped
with red flowers like hibiscus or Gudhal. The imagery of Skandmata cradling her
son is a poignant reminder of the profound power of maternal love and strength.
Her ability to nurture and protect resonates deeply with devotees who seek her
blessings for a happy family life, the well-being of their children, and the
nurturing of their own strength.
Happy Navratri to All!
May this Navratri be filled with the
blessings of Skandmata, and may her light guide us towards a path of happiness,
strength, and compassion.
