Exploring
Melbourne by Tram: A Convenient and Sustainable Way to Navigate the City
(#Melbourne By Tram)
Ever been to Melbourne? Their tram system is a fantastic way to get around the
city! During my stay, I found them incredibly convenient and a great way to
experience the city life.
Here's a breakdown of what makes
Melbourne's tram system so awesome:
- Free Tram Zone:
Within the CBD (Central Business District) and city center, trams are
completely free! Perfect for exploring the heart of the city.
- Rain or Shine:
No matter the weather, trams are a comfortable and safe way to travel. No
need to worry about getting caught in a drizzle!
- Easy Boarding:
Just hop on at any designated tram stop with clear signage displaying
maps, route numbers, and timetables. The route number is also displayed on
the front of the tram itself.
- Real-time Information: Some stops show the next tram arrival times, or you
can download the handy "Tram Tracker" and "PTV" apps
for up-to-date information.
More than just convenience, trams
play a vital role in Melbourne's life:
- Over 135 Years of History: Trams have been a crucial part of Melbourne's growth
for well over a century, contributing to its economic vitality and daily
life.
- Night Network:
Need to get around after dark? No worries! Melbourne offers trams, trains,
and buses on specific routes, especially on weekends thanks to the night
network.
- Ticketing System:
For rides outside the free tram zone, you'll need a myki card (similar to
Sydney's OPEL card). Zone 1 fares are around $10.69 for a single trip, or
$5.30 for a two-hour pass.
The Melbourne Tram Network by the
Numbers (#Melbourne Tram Facts):
- Largest Operational Network: Melbourne boasts the world's largest operational tram
network!
- Extensive Coverage:
The network centers on the CBD and covers a whopping 24 routes with 1700
tram stops.
- Capacity and Efficiency: These trams are longer than buses, allowing them to
carry more passengers efficiently.
- Yarra Trams:
The friendly folks at Yarra Trams keep the network running smoothly,
operating under lease from VicTrack and the Victorian Department of
Transport and Planning.
How to Get Your myki Card:
Purchasing a myki card is easy! Here
are your options:
1.
Retail
Outlets: Pick one up at hundreds of shops,
including all 7-Elevens within the myki boundary.
2.
Top-Up
Machines: Top up your existing card at
designated stations or stops using the convenient myki machines.
3.
PTV App: Register your card on your phone via the PTV app (may
require some processing time).
4.
Google
Wallet (Android): For Android users, link your myki
card to your Google Wallet for a seamless experience.
5.
Premium
Ticket Offices: Head to a premium station ticket
office or PTV hub for in-person assistance.
Enjoying the Ride:
Feel free to grab a snack or meal
while riding the tram, but remember to keep it clean and avoid bringing alcohol
onboard (strictly prohibited).
The Future of myki:
The Australian government is working
on upgrading the myki card service, with the possibility of integrating it into
digital wallets on smart phones and smart watches.
So next time you're in Melbourne,
ditch the car and hop on a tram!
It's a convenient, sustainable, and enjoyable way to explore this vibrant city.
