A Curious Catch: Fish Market
A
Curious Catch: Ranchi's Fish Market Bustles Despite Sawan
A stroll through Ranchi's local fish
market this past Sunday offered a surprising scene. Despite it being Sawan, a
month when many Hindus abstain from non-vegetarian food, the market thrummed with
activity. Shoppers jostled shoulder-to-shoulder, their eyes drawn to a vibrant
display of fresh fish.
The variety was impressive, with
glistening live Katla priced at ₹300 per kg, Rohu at ₹220 per kg, and the
prized Hilsa commanding a whopping ₹1500 per kg. A captivating sight was a
Bengali gentleman, a true "Bhadralok," skillfully bargaining for a
Hilsa, a testament to the enduring love for this delectable fish. Even smaller
options like Tengra found eager buyers, selling at ₹100 per 250 grams.
Intrigued by the bustling scene, I
inquired about the reason for such a vibrant market during Sawan. One seller
offered a simple explanation: sometimes, the craving for seafood proves too
strong to resist! Regardless of caste or creed, fish lovers find their way to
the market, drawn by the promise of a delicious meal.
Beyond its role in satisfying
culinary desires, the fish market serves a crucial purpose in the community. It
acts as a hub for selling not just fish, but also fish products. This bustling
marketplace connects fishermen, merchants, and consumers, ensuring a steady
flow of fresh seafood at reasonable prices.
Ranchi's recently relocated fish
market near Sector II boasts an innovative approach, even incorporating fish
farming practices. This not only ensures a steady supply but also attracts
Ranchi residents, especially on Sundays.
For seafood enthusiasts across
India, there are a plethora of iconic fish markets to explore. From the
bustling Crawford Market in Mumbai to the vibrant INA Market in New Delhi, each
offers a unique character and selection. Further south, Panaji's fish market
and Pune's Khedshivpur market offer
their own distinctive charm. And who can forget the legendary Kozhikode fish
market in Kerala, a paradise for seafood lovers!
Whether prepared with the robust
spices of North India, the tangy tamarind-infused flavors of the South, or the
delectable offerings of Goa's seafood haven, fish continues to be a beloved
culinary delight across the country. So, the next time you find yourself in Ranchi,
or any other city with a thriving fish market, don't be surprised to find it
buzzing, even during times of religious restrictions. After all, a true fish
lover's heart knows no bounds!
