Wind Point, Sinhagad Fort, Pune
A Thrilling Ride to Sinhagad Fort's Wind Point #
WindPoint
A Weekend Adventure in Pune.
Pune's rich history beckons, and on
a whim, my son and I embarked on a motorbike adventure to explore the legendary
Sinhagad Fort, located approximately 38 kilometers southwest of the city. The
bustling energy of Pune gave way to a scenic highway as we cruised towards
Khadakwasla, a renowned spot 13.7 kilometers away. Lush greenery lined the
road, culminating in a picturesque dam on the Mutha River, Pune's primary water
source. The dam's serene beauty attracted families and couples seeking a
tranquil escape. Khadakwasla also boasts the prestigious National Defence
Academy and the Central Water and Power Research Station. Monsoon paints
Khadakwasla with vibrant hues, making it a must-visit during that time of year.
Following the Footsteps of History
Continuing our journey, the 1.5-hour
drive from Khadakwasla to Sinhagad Fort took us along NH 48, a highway that
witnessed pivotal moments in India's struggle for independence. This historic
fort served as a summer retreat for Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a prominent figure in
the Indian freedom movement. Mahatma Gandhi even held a landmark meeting with
Tilak here after returning from South Africa. The fort pays homage to the
courageous Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, whose resistance against the
Mughals is etched in history. Tourists can delve deeper into the fort's past by
visiting Rajaram's tomb, the military depot, breweries, and the sacred Kali
temple.
The Legendary Wind Point
The pinnacle of Sinhagad Fort, aptly
named Wind Point, offers unparalleled panoramic vistas. A gaping valley
separates this vantage point from another mountain, creating a dramatic gorge
that descends sharply to the base. The sheer force of the wind makes standing
at Wind Point a thrilling challenge. A local myth claims that objects thrown
from here will return due to the wind's power. However, the reality is that
such actions contribute to littering and disrespecting the fort's natural
beauty. The breathtaking panorama of rolling hills and lush valleys is reward
enough.
A Culinary Adventure Awaits
The trek up to Wind Point offers a
delightful culinary experience. Local vendors line the path, enticing visitors
with fresh mangoes, tangy tamarinds, seasonal fruits, refreshing berries, and
the quintessential Mataka Churn. For a savory treat, onion Bhajis paired with
hot tea or coffee provide a welcome respite after the invigorating climb.
A Memorable Escape
Sinhagad Fort, with its historical
significance and breathtaking Wind Point, offers a stimulating escape from the
city. It's a perfect destination for both relaxation and an enriching journey
through the past. So, pack your essentials, grab your loved ones, and embark on
your own adventure to this iconic landmark.
