The Auspicious Sawan Month
The
Auspicious Sawan Month in 2024
The Sawan month, a sacred period for
Hindus dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati, commences on Monday, July 22nd,
2024, and concludes on Monday, August 19th, 2024. This year holds particular
significance as it coincides with several auspicious alignments, the last
occurrence of which being July 27th, 1953, marking a gap of 72 years.
Unique Coincidences of Sawan 2024:
- The month spans five Mondays, a rare occurrence.
- Seven auspicious alignments enhance the spiritual
significance.
Observances and Rituals During
Sawan:
Devotees of Lord Shiva traditionally
observe this month through fasting, applying tilak (holy mark) with turmeric
paste, and offering prayers at Shiva temples. Offerings typically include bel
leaves, charnamrit (holy water), bhuna chana (roasted chickpeas), jiggery, Dhatura
(sacred datura flower), milk, rice, sandalwood paste, and water from the Ganges
River.
Festivities and Preparations:
Temples across the region undergo
elaborate decorations, creating special pathways for devotees to access and
worship the deities. Devotees often queue from midnight to seek blessings from
Lord Shiva. Additionally, some perform the captivating Shiv Tandav dance to
appease the Lord.
Convenience for Devotees:
Shops near prominent temples, such
as Pahari Mandir and the 108-foot-tall Sureshwar Mahadev Temple in Chutia,
experience a surge in business, offering puja materials and religious food
items. The proximity of the Swarnrekha River to the Sureshwar Mahadev Temple
presents a unique feature – 21 Shiva lingas carved into the riverbank rocks.
Historical Significance of the
Swarnrekha River:
Legend suggests that a Nagvanshi
king created these Shiva lingas for his queens around 400 years ago. Back then,
the river was known for its gentle flow, facilitating holy baths. However, it
has become polluted by indiscriminate littering in recent times.
