Haldi Ceremony

Haldi Ceremoney

Haldi ceremony is a pious ritual which is celebrated just a day just before the marriage respectively in bride’s and groom’s house separately. In haldi ceremony a rich golden paste of turmeric is applied on the bride and groom’s skins and after that ceremonial bath is done to both of them at their respective places. It’s like a mini Holi festival so all the closest family members, relatives and friends use to take part in it in yellow attires and it’s free for all to smear Haldi paste(Ubtan or Pithi), which is made with the mixture of turmeric, sandal wood, rosewater and other auspicious ingredients  to each other faces and skins in a very cheerful way.

There are believes in countryside as well as in the cities that Haldi works to ward off evil spirit to the to be married couple, so after this ceremony they are not allowed to go out of their respective homes until their marriage is not take place. Its golden color signifies auspiciousness, purity and beginning of new life. This is done by the generally married sisters and their husband’s. During these ceremony women folks of the house and invited ladies guest also sing some traditional and ritual songs to add some more color and enjoyment. But if any unmarried girl accidently applied haldi (Ubtan) on an unmarried boy, so it’s depends upon the society to think and some take it light hearted accident or some may takes it seriously and creates much uproars in traditional patriarchal society.

So, it is a common Indian traditional pre wedding ceremony which is celebrated in every state with their regional cultures with drumming of Dhol and with Sangeet. Last evening I also become the witness of this rituals and closely watched the event enjoyed and took part in it, I also smeared Haldi on the groom face and body and in this way some lady smeared the same upon me and all of us exchanged pleasantries.
